50% of Small Businesses Survive 5 Years or More - Here are 3 Encouraging Tips to Make It | Celebrating 5 Years of Cohesive Brands!
5 years ago, Jessica Robinson, Founder and Creative Director of Cohesive Brands, took a leap of faith and grew her wings on the way down. Through Cohesive Brands, Jessica has designed hundreds of brand launches, websites, logos, business cards, shirts, vehicle decals, and more for all kinds of small businesses. She has watched her clients not only survive, but thrive - Rec Room and The Back Nine in downtown Lakeland, to name a couple of her favorites. Now, Cohesive Brands is expanding and evolving every day in its size and services.
Thinking back on these past 5 years, here’s a figure that has been on the front of our minds more than ever:
50% of Small Businesses Survive 5 Years or More.
Woah.
We’re the lucky half who’ve made it 5 years - and so are many of the clients that first trusted Cohesive Brands with their businesses. So, what’s our secret?
The truth is, there isn’t any ONE method that will guarantee your small business makes it. BUT, there are strategies that have had a huge impact - making it possible for us to keep Cohesive Brands fresh, buzzing, and moving forward.
As we mark our 5-year anniversary at Cohesive Brands, we’re reflecting on what has made our journey successful and sustainable. Success in business isn’t just about reaching the milestone - it’s about how you navigate the journey. Here are three strategies that have been central to Jessica’s perseverance, and consequently, Cohesive Brands’ success as a business.
1. A Setback is Your Sign to Pivot
In any business, setbacks are inevitable. However, viewing these challenges as opportunities rather than failures is key to long-term success. When things don’t go as planned, don’t see it as a dead end. Instead, treat it as a signal to pivot and explore alternative solutions. If your initial approach isn’t working, adjust your strategy and explore new directions. Remember, persistence in the face of adversity is often what differentiates successful businesses from those that falter.
2. Seek Counsel and Plug In
No business journey should be undertaken alone. Finding a supportive network can provide invaluable encouragement and insights, especially during tough times. Engaging with local business communities can offer the support you need. For example, Cohesive Brands has greatly benefited from the support of Polk County Women Mean Business. This incredible group is full of like-minded professionals who are eager to share advice, celebrate successes, and offer support. Plugging into these networks can provide you with the encouragement and guidance necessary to overcome challenges and thrive in your industry.
3. Keep Learning, Evolving, and Stay Genuine
Landscapes are constantly evolving, and staying ahead requires a mindset of continuous improvement. Regularly seek out new knowledge and be inspired by industry trends, but always filter these inspirations through your unique lens - no one is you, and no other business is the same as yours. Analyze what others are doing, but focus on how you can do it better and in a way that aligns with your brand’s identity. Genuine innovation comes from staying true to your core values while evolving to meet the needs of your market.
A message from Jessica:
As we celebrate five years of growth and success, I’m reminded of the core principles that have guided me through starting and growing a business. What started as a design service (Luhv’lee Design Co.) has progressed into a full-service branding agency with a team of people that keeps expanding. By embracing setbacks as opportunities, seeking and valuing community, and committing to continuous learning and authenticity, I’ve navigated 5 years of business-owning - and I’m not stopping anytime soon. I owe it to my family, who have stood by me from the beginning and believed in Cohesive Brands through it all. My husband, Garrett has dove in head-first to help me run the business. My kids, Emelia and Jaxon, inspire me every single day. My mom, dad, and sisters have surrounded me with love and support, even lending their talents to Cohesive Brands (thank you, Ashley!). I look forward to MANY more years of success and excellence for Cohesive Brands and each client I work for. From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU!
